52 Week Photography Challenge: WEEK 4 | Killing your darlings

I hope the last week got you looking at leading lines differently and you’re ready to start with week no 4 of the 52 week photography challenge.

On the third week you looked for leading lines in your surroundings and created compositions out of them.

I hope it gave you more of an understanding of how you can change the focus point of the viewer, once you build the lines to direct that focus.

This week we are not going to photograph. Instead, you are going to look at the images you’ve already shot for the last 3 weeks, and edit a new narrative out of those images. This means you will need to let go of some of your images – even some that you liked.

Even if you’ve photographed totally different objects and elements, you will have to look at all of your images at once.

Don’t be affected by the fact you’ve been photographing totally different elements and subjects during these weeks, but place them all as one body of work.

Assignment For This Week: Choose 3 images to build a visual story

  • Amount of images: 3
  • Idea: No new images – select 3 images of the old ones you’ve taken
  • Ready: By the end of week 4

Since our creative mind also needs to have breaks, but we do not want to fully stop the creative flow, we will focus our attention not in producing more images, but recreating the old ones.

During every week, you’ve had a favorite image you’ve taken for the assignments. This week look into those and see if putting them together, you can create a storyline.

You can also choose other images, that weren’t the ones you chose for the assignments. Not all images you take will work as a bridge in creating a narrative.

You can play around with this selection; see how the story changes if you take one image out and place another one there. While you are creating this series, also think about your story.

Think about the editing like in a movie: there’s a starting point, the main event, and an ending.

But you can also look at it as a reportage: An image that shows us the location it took place in, the protagonist of the story, and the solution for the question / problem at place.

There are multiple ways of making this edit, so create the one you feel compelled to. There are no wrong ways in being creative.

If you feel stuck with the images you have at the moment, you can photograph just one image to better tell your story. But try to create the storyline with the existing images.

Do not get hung up on the quality of the image just yet, these assignments are here to inspire your photographic journey.

Enjoy this assignment, and let go of any expectations you might have regarding the content of the image or how much does the final image look like your photography style. JUST GO AND SHOOT THESE IMAGES ☺︎

Good luck, and be ready for the next assignment on week 4.
