52 Week Photography Challenge: WEEK 3 | Where do the lines lead you

I hope the second week of the challenge got your creative juices flowing and you’re ready to start with week no 3 of the 52 week photography challenge.

On the second week you photographed subjects from different angles to create a new perspective on the things you photographed.

I hope it gave you more of an understanding of how you can change the story of the image, once you look at your object from a different angle.

This week we are going to look into composition a bit more: If you look around you, and everywhere you go you will find organic or man made lines within your surroundings.

Whether they’re corners of buildings or branches on a tree.

See how the lines of the lighting work in directing your view. And how it is popping out even more, once the background is dark.

Composing these lines to go either in corners of your image, cutting through your frame or even working as a frame on their own, you can direct where you want your audience to look.

This week I want you to find 3 different lines the are the main element in your images. Make sure the images are all from different subjects / places.

In the example below you can see how the window works as a frame in itself; your eyes are directed to the sea view inside of that frame.

Assignment For This Week: Photograph 3 images that have a directing line

  • Amount of images: 3
  • Dominant element: Directing lines
  • Location: Any place
  • Ready: By the end of week 3

These images can be shot in any place where you decide.

If you are not that familiar with composing images and are used to frame them the same way out of habit, you can experiment with just trying to find clear lines in your surroundings.

More on different composition can be found in this article.

Your object does not need to fit the frame fully, and creating a different narrative by maybe even cutting your object when composing the frame.
