52 Week Photography Challenge: WEEK 2 | What Story Are You Telling

I hope the first week of the challenge got your creative juices flowing and you’re ready to start with week no 2 of the 52 week photography challenge.

On the first week you photographed subjects from your surroundings and created a different perspective on the ordinary things.

This week you will look more deeply into composing your subjects. Composition is a great way of creating intriguing stories within your frame. How does your framing change the final image and what story does it tell?

Assignment For This Week: Photograph 3 images that you compose differently

  • Amount of images: 3
  • Dominant element: Same object, different composition
  • Location: Any place
  • Ready: By the end of week 2

These images can be shot in any place where you decide. Just make sure you photograph the same object / subject and differentiate the images with different composition.

If you are not that familiar with composing images and are used to frame them the same way out of habit, you can experiment with looking your object from different angles. More on different composition can be found in this article.

Your object does not need to fit the frame fully, and creating a different narrative by maybe even cutting your object when composing the frame.

You can photograph it from the top, throw it in the air or even take it out of the surrounding to a new place like the beach or a park.

Now ask yourself; How does the narrative change ?

What elements are connected to a specific point of view and how by changing that point of view – can you change the final narrative?

What if you choose to photograph the back of your object / subject? What does that communicate for the viewer?

I hope the first week of the challenge got your creative juices flowing and you're ready to start with week no 2 of the 52 week photography challenge.

You can shoot as many images as you want, but again, edit the selection to a final 3 images.

Your imagination is the only limitation here. You can shoot analog or digital, just make sure you will have the images done in one weeks time.

Some of you might still be photographing the first weeks assignment, and now we are going to wrap up both of these weeks at the same time. Why is that, you ask?

Because one of the parameters to be able to find creativity in our busy daily life is both creating that time intentionally and planning that time use.

If you did not create any images during your first week, you will now have to complete both of these assignments.

Understanding that creativity doesn’t magically flow into your days is an important lesson here – you will need to decide to take your camera and shoot these images.

Trust me – once you just start, it’s easier to complete not only this weeks assignement, but also the previous week if it was left unfinished.

Easy way to start this challenge is to take a camera with you and shoot whatever you see at first. After that you can start putting that focus into these assignments.

Another thing to remember: You do not need to carry your huge digital camera with you all the time. If you feel it’s easier to photograph passing by moments with something lightweight like your smartphone, DO THAT.

Do not get hung up on the quality of the image just yet, these assignments are here to help you to just start photographing.

Enjoy this assignment, and let go of any expectations you might have regarding the content of the image or how much does the final image look like your photography style. JUST GO AND SHOOT THESE IMAGES ☺︎

Good luck, and be ready for the next assignment on week 3.
